Hospital Bag Checklist for Mom, Dad & Baby — Plus C-Section Must-Have

When I packed my first hospital bag, my husband and I tried to bring half our house with us. Lesson learned! Experience really does shift your perspective and I’ve learned which items are truly worth the space in my bag and which ones the hospital will provide anyway. Some things are just nice-to-haves if you’re picky about comfort or have allergies, but they’re not dealbreakers if you forget them. Since I had a C-section with my first and will be having another one, I’m also adding a few recovery essentials that made my stay much easier.

Mom’s Hospital Bag Checklist

Must-Haves

  • Wallet, ID, and Insurance Card

Sounds obvious, but in the rush of labor it’s easy to forget. I use a slim phone case with a built-in wallet so everything important stays together.

  • Phone + Extra-Long Charger

You’ll use your phone more than you think — for contraction apps, music, photos, video calls, and those first baby announcements. Hospital outlets are never close to the bed, so a 10-foot charger is a lifesaver.

  • Contractions Timer App

Before I went in, I used a contractions timer app to help me track when it was time to head to the hospital. Free, easy, and way less stressful than trying to count on your fingers.

  • Headphones or AirPods

For guided meditations, calming playlists, or catching up with family without putting them on speaker while you’re nursing.

  • Nursing Bras and Tanks

Comfy, supportive, and nursing-friendly. I pack at least two bras and a tank so I don’t have to think about laundry during my stay.

  • Robe or Nursing Nightgown

A button-front gown or robe makes nurse checks and feedings easier than wrestling with pants. Lightweight but cozy is the way to go.

  • Slippers + Socks

Hospital floors are not cozy, and I don’t love wearing just hospital socks. I bring warm slipper socks plus an old pair of slippers I don’t mind tossing afterward.

  • Toiletries Bag

Yes, the hospital gives basics, but you’ll feel more human with your own. I keep mine in a clear pouch so I can grab what I need quickly:

    • Travel toothbrush + toothpaste
    • Mini body wash + loofah
    • Deodorant
    • Dry shampoo
    • Makeup wipes
    • Moisturizer & lip balm (hospitals are dry!)
    • A little makeup (concealer, mascara, lip tint) for visitors or photos
  • Comfy Going-Home Outfit

Think loose joggers or leggings that sit high on the waist, plus a nursing-friendly top. Dark colors are forgiving, and comfort is everything.

What the Hospital Provides (Save the Space!)

  • Pads, mesh underwear, peri bottle, and ice packs
  • Basic diapers and wipes for baby
  • Hospital blankets and hats for baby
  • Basic toiletries (though I prefer my own)

Unless you have allergies or strong preferences, you can skip packing these and use what’s provided.

Final Thoughts

Packing my hospital bag the second time around feels so much calmer. I know what I’ll actually use, what’s just nice-to-have, and what I don’t need to bother with at all. My advice? Start early, keep it simple, and don’t stress if you forget something — hospitals have the essentials. With the right bag, you’ll be ready to focus on what really matters: meeting your new baby.
